About

We’re a raspberry farm in the south of Johannesburg, welcoming visitors for berry picking during the raspberry season - from January to April. Our farm offers a variety of activities for all ages, including picking your own raspberries, a children's bicycle track, an outdoor playground, and live local music from time to time. Also, don't miss our stalls selling delicious food and drinks!

At our farm stall, we also sell a range of homemade raspberry products such as raspberry jam, craft beer, and frozen yogurt. During the off-season, these products and our frozen berries can be purchased by appointment.

Our Story

Our farm's history begins in 1991 when Mama Lungi joined The Field Community as a domestic worker. The aim of the community was for black and white Christians to live together as neighbours, challenging the Apartheid housing laws. It was not long before Mama Lungi became an integral part of the community.

She was incredibly motivated, getting her driver’s license at the age of 53 and completing a computer course before taking over the berry project in 2006.

She invited Tabea and Sandy to join her and, along with Malefunyana and Malefu, they built the farm to what it is today. Sadly, Mama Lungi passed away in 2023 after a long illness. She was the soul and delight of the berry farm and is sorely missed by us all.

"My flesh and heart fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

Psalm 73 vs 26

Big Mama’s Raspberry Farm

To celebrate our unique story, we've created a delightful children's book perfect for ages 6-9 with an illustration style that can be understood by any age group. The beautiful watercolour illustrations bring to life the written story of our farms journey. Inspired by the mouse characters in the book, we also sell adorable handmade field mice - a perfect keepsake from your visit! During the berry picking season our book is available from our Farm Stall. Email us if you want to buy it in the off-season.

Almond Blossom Festival

In 2020, we embarked on a new journey: almond farming. Over the past three years, we've planted 1000 almond trees and we were thrilled to host our first-ever Almond Blossom Festival at the beginning of September 2023.
